Data center
New York-based TransGas Development Systems is working to build an ammonia plant, two natural gas power plants and two data centers in Mingo County. The power plants would operate as “microgrids” powering the data centers: one at the Twisted Gun Golf Course in Wharncliffe, and one near the Mingo–Logan county line at the Harless Industrial Park in Holden.
A local landowner selling property to TransGas has told residents the ammonia plant is no longer happening, but West Virginia Watch reports that no other evidence has been provided.
On Dec. 3, 2025, ten Mingo County residents filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia against TransGas, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. They ask the court to halt ground-disturbing work until the required federal reviews are done. As of May 2026 the case was still pending.
